An Obligatory Stop for All Tourists – Petrovaradin Fortress
Petrovaradin Fortress is an unavoidable destination for all who visit Novi Sad. This grandiose fort is situated on the right bank of the Danube, on the Petrovaradin rock. It was built from 1692 to 1780, due to the constant peril of Turkish attack and the vicinity to the border with the Ottoman Empire. Especially precious is the fact that it was archaeologically determined that this area was populated by people as far back as the Palaeolithic period and that the area where Petrovaradin Fortress was populated was one of the first built-up areas in Europe.
The symbol of Petrovaradin Fortress and of Novi Sad itself is the famous “Drunken Clock”. The most interesting place for taking photos and the place with a grandstand view of the city got this name for the odd arrangement of clock hands. Namely, the short hand shows the minutes, and the long one the hours, which is the opposite of the ordinary clock hands functioning. The clock tower is clearly visible from the city side as well, so the view of the fortress is even prettier and more romantic.
Apart from the clock tower, the Petrovaradin Fortress gates are also picturesque and inspirational. Several gates, that were named after places to which they lead or after significant personalities, have plenty of memories behind them and will always welcome you wide open.
The fortress itself is located in the special and equally historically important part of Novi Sad – Petrovaradin. The old part of Petrovaradin, the famous Podgrađe, is surrounded by moats that were once filled with water. Now the significant military and health institutions are located there, and also the charming residential buildings that testify of the old times. The streets of Podgrađe are very authentic, narrow and mostly paved in cobblestone. A walk on these streets is the right choice for all those who enjoy romance, taking photos, and watching unique and vivacious details.
You can find more on the rich history and cultural significance of this edifice by visiting the City Museum of Novi Sad which is open to visitors every day from 9 am to 5 pm and is located in the very heart of the fortress. But if you want to go one step further and find out the biggest secrets hidden behind the fortress walls, anecdotes and urban legends that follow it, we will be happy to recommend you tourist tours organized almost daily by Novi Sad agencies. The good news for all those who like an easy stroll is that Petrovaradin Fortress is located not far from the Hotel Pupin, so your desired destination can be reached pretty quickly and easily by foot. If you do not have a walking habit, the Hotel Pupin staff will with pleasure refer you to transport.
Novi Sad possesses a handful of cultural and historical pearls. Petrovaradin Fortress, in the opinion of many, is the greatest pearl of this city. Welcome to the city of culture, memories, important events and notable places!
