In 1854 in the Banat Village Idvor, Mihajlo Pupin was born into a twelve-member family. A distinguished scientist, inventor, professor at Columbia University, an honorary consul of the Kingdom of Serbia in the USA – to whom the entire mankind is indebted for his inventions – he also served as an inspiration for the name and the concept of our luxurious hotels in the centre of Novi Sad – Pupin Hotel.

The figure and work of Mihajlo Pupin, as well as his development path, are linked principally to education, professional development, and scientific work. What marked the life and work of this inventor is “Pupin’s Theory” when he devised a means of greatly extending the range of long-distance telephone communication by placing loading coils (of wire) at predetermined intervals along the transmitting wire.

Besides an enviable academic career and scientific and research work, Pupin was also known as someone who was extremely connected to his roots. The fact that he was one of the founders and a longtime president of the Serbian National Foundation in America is also a testimonial of that. Wishing to preserve the memory of his origin, and name, before going into the world, he added the middle name “Idvorski”. Pupin was also a founder of two funds, one, that carried his mother’s name and was intended for the education of more than 20,000 war orphans from World War I, and the second that carried his name and served as a support to his home town Idvor.

It is also important to mention his literary work and the success he achieved. Pupin received the 1924 Pulitzer Prize in biography for his autobiographical work From Immigrant to Inventor thus becoming the first Serbian to receive this prestigious acknowledgement.

A great mind, but primarily a great man, he is remembered for all these things. Today a large number of primary and secondary schools carry his name, and the home town Idvor proudly points out their most eminent citizen. October 9 is celebrated throughout the world, and with this text in our way, we pay tribute to the person whose name is born by our hotel.
