Recommendation for a one-day Fruška gora monastery tour

Fruška gora is famous for being the only mountain in Vojvodina and for offering its visitors
numerous excursion sites, walking trails and the most beautiful viewpoints that give a surreal
view. This mountain beauty near Novi Sad, apart from extraordinary natural potential and
resources, also bears an incredible cultural-historical story and its hillsides show the evidence of
the identity and suffering of a nation. On Fruška gora, up to 35 Orthodox monasteries have
been built, and today 17 are preserved. It is considered that the majority of them were built
during the period from the 15th to 18th century, as an endowment of the despotic family
Branković, that followed the cult of the old Nemanjić state. Due to inconvenient historical
events, wars, conquests, and pillage, a significant number of monasteries were pretty
devastated, or completely destroyed. The largest part of these sacral buildings was destroyed
during World War II. Each monastery is characterised by a specific style and recognisable
architecture of a certain time, and in the vicinity of each is usually a spring, monastery property,
and a monastery settlement – prnjavor.
During the visit to Novi Sad, we advise you to visit at least some of the Fruška gora monasteries,
if not all of them. The biggest and the most famous among them are an essential part of the
tourist offer of the city since they are located as little as thirty minutes from the city centre. We
recommend several most significant Fruška gora monasteries that you can visit in only one day:
Krušedol – Đorđe Branković, a despot, started the construction of the temple dedicated to the
Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and according to the legend, it had lasted for entire 50
years. The famous iconostasis, the rich treasury, the dwelling, and a unique beauty place this
monastery among the most important sacral buildings in Serbia.
Velika Remeta – A male monastery dedicated to Saint Demetrius possesses the highest bell
tower in Srem, 38.4 meters high. It is recognisable by the famous heavenly garden, a replica of
the Bethlehem cave and Sion hills with the chapel and Ubavac spring with water that clears the
eyesight.
Grgeteg – The legend says, that no later than the 15th century, this monastery with the Saint
Nicholas’ Church was founded by Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk for his blind father. Iconostasis painted by

Uroš Predić and the Three-Handed Virgin Mary attract the attention of the numerous pilgrims,
and to the east of the monastery gate, there is the geological-paleontological site of great
significance.
Novo Hopovo- The first Đurađ Branković’s endowment has since a long time ago been
recognised as a prominent education centre, in which Serbs from the capital city came to learn
to read and write. Novo Hopovo is especially known as a monastery where Dositej Obradović
became a monk. Two kilometres away there is Staro Hopovo monastery, which you can also
visit on the same day.
Apart from the monasteries mentioned, on Fruška gora, there are also: Petkovica, Rakovac,
Divša, Jazak, Mala Remeta, Beočin, Privina Glava, Šišatovac, Kuvežedin, and Vrdnik – Ravanica.
